You’re flipping through the channels on your television trying to make a compromise with your significant other on what to watch on a Friday night. “Knicks vs. Nets! And the Knicks are winning!” Nope. “Oh! The Bourne Supremacy!” Hmm, no. “HGTV Design All Stars?!” No thank you. “Okay, Iron Chef?” Yeah, no! The flipping continues, and you suddenly come across the red carpeted Academy Awards. The debate instantaneously is settled, The Oscars it is! Everyone likes to see some of their favorite famous faces receiving awards based on their performance over the past year. If there were an academy awards event for some of the most luxurious car brands, it’s safe to say you would be just as glued to your television screen. Well sit back and enjoy the show, because BMW has set quite a few records this year, and they just pulled up with a shiny new paint job and a fresh wash and wax!
BMW manufacturing Co. located in Spartanburg South Carolina, a subsidiary of BMW AG in Munich, Germany is the global producer of the BMW X3 and X5 Sports Activity Vehicles and X6 Sports Activity Coupe. They have set a new production record in 2012, assembling over 300,000 vehicles. This is marked the highest production volume in the South Carolina plant’s 19 year history. Pretty impressive right? That is a 9 percent increase in manufacturing rate from 2011, with the assembly of roughly 276,000 vehicles, and a 90 percent increase in production output since 2010. Over 1,000 vehicles are built each day and 700 of those vehicles — 70 percent– are scheduled to be distributed to individual dealers each day within 130 global markets! BMW is among 11 other finalists for the top manufacturing honor. Coming off a phenomenal year in all aspects, BMW is competing for top honors at the 2012 Silver Crescent Awards for manufacturing excellence. Recognizing all plants in South Carolina, and their high achievements and contributions this past year, BMW’s North American manufacturing headquarters is in the running. The winner is judged based on “the seven crescents of excellence,” citizenship, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, environmental stewardship, innovation, financial performance and commitment to longevity. The winners will be announced March 21st at an awards event. Can you handle the suspense? We can’t, but sit tight, the show goes on!
The BMW Group achieved its highest sales ever in 2012 strengthening its position as the leading provider of premium vehicles worldwide! According to company data, deliveries have soared 43% since 2009. Records totaled 1,845,186 vehicles delivered worldwide between BMW, Rolls-Royce and MINI. This marked a 10.6 percent increase over the previously recorded sales from 2011 –1,668,982 vehicles–. BMW sales alone rose 11.6 percent in 2012 to reach a total of 1,540,085 vehicles, the best sales level in the history of the brand! Of those vehicles, 152,286 were delivered in December alone an 18.8% increase from the same time in 2011. One of the leading models in terms of growth was the 1 series with a total of 226,829 vehicles sold in 2012, a 28.6% increase from 2011. The BMW X1 and X3 continued their strong sales strength totaling 147,776 X1 vehicles sold a 16.9% increase and a 27.1% increase for the X3. The BMW 5 series solidified a leading position as well with a total of 337,929 vehicles sold, a 9% increase from 2011. The BMW 6 series increased its sales percentage by 146.8 percent since 2011. This increase was also aided by the introduction of new models such as the Grand Coupe and the new body of the M6 650. The BMW 3 Series Sedan claimed leadership with a winning 249,034 vehicles sold, a 22% increase from 2011. The crowd roars as BMW seems to be the center of the red carpet event!
The year (award show) came to a speedy close and BMW dominated! With all time high records set in production volumes, manufacturing rates and sales, BMW expects record sales to continue into 2013 and to enter the New Year with planned expansion and new model growth. BMW the world’s largest maker of luxury vehicles expands its lead having exceeded both Audi who totaled 1.45 million vehicles sold, and Mercedes-Benz, with a sold 1.32 million vehicles in 2012. Mercedes-Benz officials are very confident that they will become the number one premium vehicle producer in the world, by the year 2020, however BMW begs to differ. “We enter the New Year with positive momentum and despite the prevailing headwinds in some markets, we aim to achieve another record year in sales in 2013,” said BMW sales and marketing boss Ian Robertson. BMW deliveries are expected to rise by 4.6% in 2013 according to IHS Automotive which will help it defend the top spot that both Audi and Mercedes Benz believe they will take by the end of the year. BMW will introduce the 4-Series, a coupe based on the 3-series and a mini paceman crossover coupe and the BMW i3, the first electric vehicle. “We expect the luxury market in 2013 to continue to be challenging,” Bentley Chief Executive Wolfgang Schreiber said, “With significant new model introductions, we believe we have the potential to maintain growth.”
